I didn’t have a green thumb. To be honest with you, I had a reputation as something of a plant-killer. I could buy the best potting soil, follow instructions from a book perfectly, and still end up with a puny, malnourished plant almost every time. That always disappointed me, too. Like everyone else, I love plants. I appreciate their natural beauty and I am a big fan of tasty, fresh vegetables. Unfortunately, my “black thumb” was holding me back. That’s before I really learned about hydroponics, which is the process of growing plants without using any soil. Read the rest of this entry »

Now you might think that putting them in an enclosed cabinet with your plants would just "cook" them. But that is not so. The grow closet we have designed is "turbo" air-cooled by an exhaust fan at the top (hot air out) and inlet holes in the bottom (cool air in). The temp inside the box stays in the optimum growing range for warm season plants like tomatoes, peppers, beans, cucumbers and herbs. Read on and I will tell you all about my great little closet grow box, the simple yet prolific bubbler unit, and how you can easily create this system for yourself.
You’re going to buy a ready made wooden box (a pre-fab storage cabinet). We tell you which one and where to buy it; it costs about $95. If you want to scout around first before buying our kit, this is the cabinet you will need: [ClosetMaid Model # 12298. It is 72" high X 30"wide X 20 1/2" deep]. Look for it at Home Depot. You could also use a different brand but similar cabinet. Read the rest of this entry »

Welcome to self-sufficient-life.com – A growing resource of books, articles and audio/visual about self sufficiency and rural and country style living.
Edmund Morris had dreamed for many years of moving to the country, reading all he could about farming and taking a keen interest in anything agricultural. His city life had had its ups and downs and although close to bankruptcy on more than one occasion he had managed to settle his affairs and resolved to quit the city before things got any worse "the whole business horizon seemed full of coming storms, which burst successively with desolating severity". He was under no illusions; farming would be hard work and was unlikely to make him rich, but he believed strongly that it could be made to keep him and his family comfortable and so he embarked on his journey towards self sufficiency… Read the rest of this entry »
